Gripping. Unnerving.
Mexican Gothic is gothic. It's dark. Yet, it does start off speaking to you slowly, placing us in the year 1950, Mexico.
Similar to scary movies, Mexican Gothic's story begins light, witty, conversational. But soon, the character finds themselves in a bind—way too late to easily escape—the gasps of horror.
In the midst of the book, Silvia Moreno-Garcia drew descriptions of things, moments, dreams that may be hard to explain, well.
Delicate and creepy depictions made me feel as though I was watching a film. (So much so that I only decided to read this book in the daytime—a vivid imagination is a must for this read!)
At the same time, (as the title of the book does imply) some of the scenarios are disconcerting and definitely might be triggering...as a forewarning to those interested in reading.
The premise of the book, however, is a favorite. It's an important message that Silvia shares.
She speaks on how generations can wreak havoc and it is the livings' duty to eliminate generational destruction.
Silvia's 'A Letter From the Author' explains how, "...the sins of our ancestors..." can leave dark, gloomy, terrifying scars on the land, the people who once lived and the living.
What I loved most was not only the message but the details Silvia left readers, throughout the book.
The ideas were threaded together, so the beginning, middle, and end served very much a purpose to the storytelling—and—I loved reading about a main character that was brown, intelligent, with a story bringing an important and captivating message throughout.
BOOK GOAL: 5 books read /25 books to read in 2022
What have I read so far?
I've picked books all by women of different backgrounds and ethnicities. My focus moving forward is finding books by minorities that share stories intertwining culture and fiction. The exploration of new reads has assured me historical fiction including some sort of murder mystery is a favorite of mine.
I'll write up another post with all the books that are coming up on my To Read list (I have a few for the next coming months), but in the meantime, check out the books I've read this year and a couple I have coming up!
