I always find it daunting, putting a piece up for sale but then coming to find out no one's interested in buying. Or, at least it feels this way sometimes.
But one thing I started to realize was, I was painting for other people, drawing for other people. And, when creating, I believe money will work itself out later. I believe when you're authentic, people notice this and can sense and feel it.
As a creative, I feel it is so important to be authentically you—even if you are hiding this part of yourself—eventually it comes forth in your work.
I had to figure out what message I wanted to come forth. Going to Alaska empowered me to showcase nature in its simplicity. It helped me find a piece of my voice that I would always want to be part of my work.
I wanted to give people the same peace that I experienced when lying down in a tent on the refreshing cool earth; the tranquility of listening to a stream flow, while falling asleep.
I wanted to commemorate heavily melanated skin and nature. I began this back in 2013 but lacked the confidence to carry out my thoughts into artwork. However, creating the Alaska series fueled new ideas and the confidence for manifesting my creative endeavors.
Finding my voice through art is the most exciting and frustrating thing.
Going natural and starting my The Curlfriend | For the Curlfriends blog ignited a deeper self-loving perspective toward my beauty, a type of beauty that is not often represented in the media as the kind of humans who exude greatness.
So, I decided to represent melanated skin, myself and so many others, through bare and brown silhouettes caressing nature, unveiling the innate value and beauty in melanin skin and dark features.
What to Expect: The Launch of My Series
To honor the earth-conscious habits I am adopting, all my pieces will and are created with repurposed cardboard pieces with 100% cotton and acid-free canvas wrap. Currently, I am investigating eco-friendly glazes and varnishes, etc.
Within the next few months, I will be creating a 'For Sale' section on this website and updating my Facebook page to promote my Alaska and Goddess artwork series.
The Alaska series will consist of a total of 10 pieces. One larger piece that is 8 x 12 and the remaining 4 x 6. Some prints may be available depending on manufacturing availability due to COVID.
The Goddess series is still in the works, but the number of pieces and sizes of the artwork will be available soon.
However, what I can tell you is that the Goddess series will also include bookmarks and prints, to acknowledge the #blacklivesmatter movement. And prints will not be available for this series, only originals.

Quarantine has shown me how to slow down and have patience with improving my artistic skill and the message I want to convey. Especially with the recent movement, I want to showcase melanated skin and the power it holds.
Empowering others through my work to see life in the light it can shed, is my #1 goal. The 'For Sale' section will be promoted through a post on my Facebook and Instagram, so stay tuned for my launch date! The post will include all of my artwork sale details, including how to make commission requests, prices, discounts, and shipping information, etc.
With love,
